SAND ISLAND BEACH COTTAGES |CALM AT TIWI
Sand Island beach cottages
We had to take a dusty road to reach Sand Island Beach. We didn’t know what we were going to find there, although the ride totally worth it. Arty and Cheryl are managers of this secret place hidden away in Tiwi. He cottage look straight on to a private, white sandy beach about 200 meters from in front of a beautiful coral reef. They work very closely with the local community, who will guide you out to the reef, the starfish island, Africa pool as well as provide you with fresh fish and seafood daily. Each member of community benefits from the Sand Island guests and in return they are respectful and do not hassle you at all.
Sand Island cottages are simple and authentic cottages. Nothing is fancy there, however we found all we needed. Well equipped kitchens and utilities. We felt like a Robinson Crusoe on your own Island. There magic in this place.
Between February and June, green sea turtle come out of the water and lay their an average of 120 eggs in nest they dig in the sand along the beach. We were lucky enough to see one these great creatures digging her nest and then witness baby sea turtle hatching eggs and flapping their way to the ocean. It is sad to know that only one or two out of a hundred will survive the various predator to come back to the same beach where they were born 30 years later to lay their own eggs this time. Incredible mothernature.
Additionally, the local community takes care of a Star fish conservation area. We found plenty and with all colours. The urchins are plentiful so bring appropriate foot wear, although Arty and Cheryl do have reef shoes you can borrow in the office. We decided to ride the 300 meters on a local dugout canoe which was fun.
Sand Island Beach Cottages are all 'self catering' but you can have a local cook to hire at a very reasonable cost. Omari was our personal cook and he would buy some fresh fish, straight from the fishermen on the white sandy beach right there in front of the cottages. There is a great choice of super fresh fish and seafood. White, lemon and Red Snappers, Parrot fish, Lobster, Crab, Calamari and Octopus. Omari was able to prepare us some simple and yummy meals including great barbecues. He was also able advice on which type and how much fish to ask the local fisherman tor next morning.
Oh... one piece of advice if you do drop by and say there one day, don’t leave your fruit platter unattended on the table, the local monkeys surrounding the area may just rob you of your breakfast.
The people were really friendly, the place quite and intimate and we had a wonderful time there. It has been our most favourite experience on the South Coast. You can forget all of your problem at Sand Island. Life becomes so simple and so beautiful at the same time thanks to stunning nature surrounding you, the beautiful reef and the wild life.
Check out our pictures, for sure you’ll love it.
